plugging away!

6 Jan

Now six days into GYWO ’10, and I’ve already written 1600 words or so. Woohoo. Started a character sketch for Ava last night, and while it went well, I discovered I so need a big fill in chart of character traits. It makes things so much easier than freestyling it. Haha. I figure if I can fill the entire thing out, then I will know I have a firm grasp on who my characters really are, so then I can write them properly. I am a big believer in knowing who my characters are, even if I may not start out that way. Eventually I get a grasp on their ways and behaviors and their voices.

I think characters are my favorite thing…has been since I was young. I can remember being in like, 4th grade, coming up with little stories and always making sure that my characters were set first. It’s fun for me, coming up with the character list and their names and their looks. I’m a big nerd and I search for photos that seem to fit the characters.  They rarely become just stock photos, but mostly some celebrity that at least fits the look of the character. For example, my lead character for In The Spotlight (the novel), Ava Bennett–she is “portrayed”, if you will, by Mandy Moore. Ryan Harper, another lead character, is portrayed by Chris Pine. And to be honest, I’ve switched people around too. Ryan originally reminded me of Dave Annable (from the tv show Brothers & Sisters), but something changed in my brain and he suddenly didn’t fit the bill.

But back to the character charts…I have a bookmarks folder full of writing links and in there, I have at least three different sites that have downloadable character trait charts.  So of course, I actually freakin’ downloaded one and vow to fill it out completely for my four main characters. And I am not going to skimp on it and give up on it. I figure maybe it’ll give me more fodder to intertwine their stories into a proper plot!

I never used to love writing challenges…now I do. Well, that’s not completely true either. Perhaps I mean original writing challenges. I did many fanfic challenges in the procedural tv drama department, but doing ti with original stories and characters is a whole other ball game! Eep.

challenge started!

3 Jan

So far, so good. The Get Your Words Out 2010 challenge has begun, and already I’ve been doing well with the writing.  I guess the good part about doing the single project pledge at 100k words means I can really focus on scenes and little things, which is where I tend to struggle. I “only” have to write 274 words per day, but it’s rare when I merely write that. It’s really the point of sticking to one project (In The Spotlight).

On the other hand, I think this week I am really going to work on character sketches for Ava, Ryan, Lily, and Nathan. they are a pretty integral part of the story, and somehow I have to connect all their stories. Ava and Ryana re the focs, of course, but Lily has her little subplot and Nathan has his as well…and they all have to tie together, because Ryan and Ava’s story is the focus of the entire plot, with Ryan’s troubles with Adam and the impact of those troubles on his still rather new career.  And Lily deals with the critical acclaim she’s always wanted, and the focus that comes with it. Ava deals with Lily and with Ryan’s troubles, and then discovers her best friend (Nathan) has a troubled life of his own that he’s never revealed.

Although, the more I think about it, the more I could spin Nathan off into his own story…hmm.

I also have to get the story to a point where Ava does get her own record label, after everyone realizes she needs to be running musical careers, just not one the road all the time. This is after she organizes the benefit concert that goes off perfectly.

Lots to think about, but first, character sketches so I can get a handle on who they are and where they need to go in the story!

pledging to write in 2010!

20 Dec

Made a decision a week or so ago to continue on with a writing community over on LJ that I’ve been participating in for the past year. This year, I pledged to write a total of 200,000 words in 2009. And I fulfilled this challenge–something I am incredibly proud of. I not only wrote stuff for Reasons Why, but for various other fandoms and little stories here and there, along with starting the novel I’ve dreamed of writing for so long.

Now, in 2010, I am going to continue with the challenge, but I modified my pledge for the year. This time around, I pledged to write 100,000 words, but on a single project. So I am fully committing myself to buckle down and write In The Spotlight to the fullest extent I possibly can. I really have a solid plot going, I just need to get it to have a middle and an end. I need to establish Ava, Ryan, and Lily a lot stronger, and layer Nathan in better. I not only have the main Ava/Ryan plot, but the Ava/Nathan subplot, and the Lily plot in general.  I need to figure out how to get to the overall Ryan plot and have it tie in altogether.

I really think that focusing on ITS this coming year will either make or break my dream of having a novel written from start to finish. I don’t know if I anticipate having the novel DONE in 2010, but I think it will be in a much better place by the end, either way. I’ve already resigned myself to sit down daily and write someting for ITS every single day, from a scene to a character sketch to a few lines of dialogue. It will all come together eventually. I vow to make a valiant effor to get this sucker moving in the right direction. And yet it slightly scares me to know that I am going to be focusing so intently one this single project.

On the other hand, it also gives me the freedom to not use word counts on other projects, as Reasons Why will definitely continue on.

I’m excited to see what happens on the writing front this coming year…I think it will really bring my focus to something I’ve wanted for as long as I can remember…to write a novel. I don’t really care to sumbit it, per se, but who knows, maybe I’ll get the confidence to give that a shot. We shall see.

something new…

8 Nov

Something new to try out. I really want to blog my writing again. I tried it once and to be honest, I got bored with it quickly. This time, I vow to concentrate on what I am doing!

Am going to blog about fanfic and original writing, and keep track of my music playlists for all stories/characters involved. An intro to my current projects will come in the near future.

Yay for new toys! =)
